“Saints must walk through Hell, so that Sinners don’t”

Over My Dead Body

I have been thinking long and hard one of my favorite quotes,

” If Sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.” – Charles Spurgeon

Spurgeon saw a need, and knew that the need was not being filled. He saw a multitude heading to Hell, and knew that Christians needed step up to the plate. The heart breaking aspect of all this is that Charles Spurgeon said this many years ago, and yet here we are still seeing a ‘save point church’. This is not what the church was meant to be, but rather a major sin that has become adopted by many churches today.

Save Point Christians are those who reach the ‘save point’ in their lives. They are regenerated, but not energized. Many times we see a major drive in the beginning of their lives, but then after a few hardships and or trials they slow down and just lean on that eternal security. They reach the point where they are saved, but do not go past that. Much like playing a video game, hitting the check point, then turning off the game console. There is no push for the ultimate goal, but rather an acceptance of the minimal goal.

Charles Spurgeon saw a need for the church to get off their butts. He saw that many of the people in his community were heading to Hell, or he realized that a world full of people are heading to hell. He saw a church that was letting them walk by with no effort in stopping their descending into Hell, and he began to cry out for a change. He understood that not all would accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and not all would make it to Heaven. He knew that sometimes the point may seem ridiculous in nature, but he called out for the church to give all they had.

As a Christian today, how much would you be willing to lay down so that someone else may get saved? Would you hold on to their legs begging that they turn to Christ? Would you stand in the way of all the fiery darts and arrows headed their way so that they may have just a few more minutes to accept Christ? Would you be like the Baptist Pastor on the Titanic who gave up his life vest to a gentleman who would not accept Christ so that he could have one more day to change his mind? How far would you go? Or are you just happy at your save point?
