A while back I was challenged by an evangelist. This evangelist offered me the idea that pastors take 30 minute sermons to explain something that is so simple. He raved on about how it seems that we like to add in all the complicated stuff like doctrine and theology into the Gospel and wonder why people are not accepting Christ. He told me that we expect people to understand calculus when we haven’t even told them about addition and subtraction. His premise for the entire conversation was that it should only take the time it takes to get from the ground floor to the third floor in an elevator to explain the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then he challenged me.
The challenge was that in the next two minutes I had to lead him to Christ, so what was I gonna do? I offered him three verses and just blurted them out in haste: Romans 5:8 and John 3:16-17. He looked at me and was said “See, wasn’t that easy? If I didn’t know Jesus, I would now.”
Christians, you do not have to do it my way but I challenge you to simplify the Gospel. No, there is not an Easy Jesus but accepting Jesus is Easy.
