Often times we tend to treat pastors as something other than what they are, human. People take them for granted, people expect them to be at our beckoning call, people dump all our “garbage” on them and then leave without accepting advice. People look at our pastors as some inhuman automatons that are able to withstand the world. They never understand that pastors are human too. Life hits them just as hard as it does the rest of the world, and pastors tend to take more on than others. They become a rock in some people’s lives. In those moments when you are in crisis, they are the ones who show up at your door when no one else even bothered to call. No matter what is going on in their world, you are on their mind.
There are times your pastor is in their office with their head buried in their hands as they are weeping for you. There are times they are in their car so tired from all the driving, but you needed them. They may be running off of an hour of sleep, but they will be by your side while you are in the emergency room. They may be stressed about finances and how they are going to keep their family afloat, but if you needed $5 they would give it to you willingly. These are a people who care with all of their being for you in every moment of every day and want to help show you the greatest gift of all time no matter what condition they are in.
In a month where we express suicide awareness for all demographics with a stress on military and teenagers, I ask you to keep your pastor in your prayers. In a world where pastors are lucky to retire as pastors, I ask you to take care of them. With a job that requires so much of a person, I ask you to support them. Know your pastors have a family that has needs, has a heart that needs uplifting, and a being that can use a hug some days. Take care of the people in your lives that are doing all they can to take care of you.
