Still Small Voice

Many times, we enter into a world of utter panic. We lose track of the main focus of our journey with God and cause ourselves to enter into a realm of hopelessness. We may have been so zealous for God and even seeing massive miracles happen in our lives, but a road bump appears, and we get thrown off the path. Much like Elijah, we run.

In 1 Kings chapter 19, we meet a man who was on fire for God. Elijah, the great prophet! A man who is after God and as he says, “very jealous for the Lord God of Hosts” (1 Kings 19:10, 14). This man is passionate about his workings for God and proceeds in previous chapters to have God show off and show out. Then he has a vow made against him by the most powerful and evil person in the entire kingdom. Instantly, Elijah ran for the hills. Literally!

During Elijah’s panic, God began to care for him. God could have shown up right there when the threat arose, but God knows how to time God’s entrances. God sent an angel to care for Elijah in a miraculous way and sent Elijah on his way to the place God would meet with him. When Elijah made it to the cave on Mt. Horeb, Elijah was given orders to wait at the opening of the cave for God to show up. He witnessed amazing act of God, but soon realized that God was not in any of them. Elijah waited patiently and heard the still small voice. Elijah exited the cave and he was given a chance to be face to face with God. In the midst of the panic Elijah was in, everything was made clear.

We tend to go through these seasons of panic and fear. We do not know what is coming next, or we do not know what is going to happen to us in the long run. We beg and beg for God to show up in the big ways like he did for the Hebrews leaving Egypt or when God showed up in 1 Kings 18, but God has a different plan. Instead of adding to the panic with the adrenaline rush God can give in the big miraculous events, God speaks softly as a parent to their child. God tells us the next steps and commands us to proceed. The best part, God promises us protection through the commands.
