I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, I would often ask why Sunday School was so important to the believer. To me it was just an extra thing to do on Sunday Morning. Honestly, I valued sleep more than getting up earlier to go to Sunday School. It was an extra thing, not important, just more listening to someone drone on for an hour about something that I could have read in my devotional time. It seemed like a waste of my time; and sadly, this is a common trend among believers. “Sunday School is a waste of time! Why do I need to go to Sunday School when I can read the Bible at home? I never get anything out of the lessons anyways, why should I go back?” If we really want to be truthful, we all have probably said one of these at some point. The reality is that we have forgotten why Sunday School is so important for us and our families as believers. So, I would like to give you 3 reasons why Sunday should be a priority in your life!
- Sunday School is a part of the Great Commission.
In Matthew 28:20, we see the command to “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…” We are not only to go and make disciples, or to baptize, we are to teach believers as well. We are so ready to go and evangelize, but when it comes to the next step of raising new believers in the Word, we don’t see it as important. We need to follow all three parts of the Great Commission of God, not just one or two.
- Sunday School offers an opportunity for dialogue
Sunday School offers an opportunity for you to be able to ask questions, dialogue with your teacher, dive deeper into the Word of God, and feel confident with your knowledge of it. Why give up an opportunity to get answers to your questions? You only get out of Sunday School what you put into it. So, give it all you got!
- Sunday School offers a deeper community.
One of the most important parts of a Sunday School program other than the teaching of the Gospel, is the community of believers. We have programs for youth groups to give them a community in the church, but when we get to adulthood, we find a lack of friends in the congregation. Often, it feels as if we are sitting next to strangers in the pew. Sunday School offers an opportunity for us to connect as believers, make friends within our church, and have a group of people to lean on when we are feeling weak spiritually. Our churches need community. Why give up an opportunity to connect?
Sunday School holds an important place in the life and growth of our church. I hope that you will come and join us. Sunday School starts at 9:30am on Sundays with a class for all ages. I hope to see you there.
