Throughout all of my schooling and my time in churches, I have always heard the phrase “6 days of Creation”. This confused me since while I was growing up going to a Vacation Bible School on the military base I heard that there were 7 days that God took to create our universe. This got me thinking. God purposefully shows 7 days in scripture and they must be important.
According to Genesis Chapter 2 verse 2 we see that God completed His work on the seventh day.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Seeing this gives me reason that God tied up the small things on the seventh day, but to be honest it isn’t the fact that anything was done on the seventh that I want to stress. I want to stress to you that God showed us one of the most important things to do when it comes to our work. God rested.
Our world is in this fast pace society. We are constantly connect via social media and cellphones. We have no off switch anymore. In this we have found that anxiety is sky rocketing, mental and social disorders are at an all time high, the rate of stress and suicide are peaking, and we feel hopeless as a community. When we look at the model that God offers us on this Seventh Day of Creation, we need to learn to take a day of rest.
God blessed this seventh day and set it apart from all other days, God showed us that this day of rest that God took was not something to be sacrificed when it came to work. It is something that needs to be cherished and held on to. I our lives we need to hold dear to our days of rest. Be it a day of sleep and relaxation, a day of fun, or a day of worship, we need to latch onto our Sabbath “Day of Rest”.
