Our Stubbornness and Pride

As we walk with the Lord, Jesus leads us to this wall. We rush ahead shouting “No worries Jesus I can do this one!” as we try our hand at scaling the wall. We try and try and after a while shrug and give up. We walk back to Jesus with the look of disappointment and fuss because this was all Christ’s plan. Jesus slowly grabs us by the hand and leads us to the wall. Jesus says softly, “If you would learn to follow me and not try to do this on your own, you would have seen this.” as Jesus gestures to a door.

Too often we here these stories of people who try their hand at conquering the obstacles of life. I have sat with many students and parishioners who have asked me simply, “Why is God making my life so hard?” I answer in the most gentle manner possible, “Maybe it isn’t God who is making everything difficult. Who is the one controlling your steps?”

God has promised to be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. God has promised to guide us the way we are to go, and keep us from tripping up. It is when we run ahead of the lamp that we tend to find the stumbling block. Let Christ guide you. You can’t do this on your own.
